Why a food wholesaler is building embedded finance products for the hospitality industry

Listen to our very first podcast episode and learn from Michael Zyber, CEO at Metro FS, and how he has turned a decades-old German corporate into an embedded finance company.

Hi embedded finance friend!

After months of talking about it, I finally did it: I launched the Embedded Finance Review podcast. In all honesty, I should have done much earlier, because there is nothing new that I learned between having the idea and today. I was planning to invest more time to create the perfect embedded finance podcast, but I guess we all know you only learn when you actually do it.

Nevertheless, launching something new is always a bit scary. That’s why I want to ask you for a few small favours:

  1. Listen to the episode (link in the section below)

  2. Share feedback with me (you can use the survey at the end of this email, but make sure to add a comment)

  3. Share the podcast with your network

  4. Follow the podcast in your podcast app

  5. Rate the episode in your podcast app

If you can support me with one or even all of the favours, then the next drink is on me 😊

Additionally, I can already share that I have received a few inquiries from people who want to be interviewed next. It looks like I have material for the next 4–5 episodes. But please continue to share suggestions for future episodes with me. It doesn’t matter if the company is a non-financial brand, an infrastructure provider, or even a bank—as long as it is an interesting embedded finance story, it fits perfectly.

But now let’s dive into the first podcast episode! 👇

Podcast 🎙️

Why a food wholesaler is building embedded finance products for the hospitality industry

In the inaugural episode of the Embedded Finance Review Podcast, I interview Michael Zyber, CEO of Metro Financial Services. Metro is a traditional food wholesaler founded in 1964 that has ventured into the fintech space to offer innovative financial solutions.

You can find the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • Strategic rationale: Explore the reasons behind Metro's decision to launch financial services and how this move aligns with their broader business goals.

  • Unique business perspective: Learn how Metro, a decades-old food wholesaler, successfully launched a fintech subsidiary to offer financial services to the hospitality sector.

  • Strategic insights: Discover why Metro chose to focus on a card product with 1% cashback and how this decision fits into their broader strategy.

  • Customer-centric approach: Hear about the importance of understanding customer needs, particularly in a traditionally underserved sector, and how Metro tailored its offerings accordingly.

  • Future plans: Gain insights into Metro Financial Services' future plans to fully embed their financial products into Metro’s core business and enhance the customer experience.

Don’t miss this episode packed with valuable lessons for any business looking to explore embedded finance.

A short update on my mailing cadence:

  • From now on, I will send out a weekly Embedded Finance Review newsletter. A newsletter will either include a new podcast episode (like this one) or a news summary (like last week).

  • It is my goal to allow you to select the types of mailings you want to receive (for example, only the news summaries but not the podcast mailings). Please give me until the next podcast episode in two weeks to integrate this feature.
